Porto Côvo , a nice fishing village

Porto Côvo continues to be a pleasant fishing village, with low white houses, rebuilt by the Marquis of Pombal after the 1755 earthquake. The beautiful steep and hidden beaches along the coast are well worth a visit. In summer, many holidaymakers visit the area to recover their strength, finding peace and quiet now lost in time. About 250 metres off Porto Côvo, you can see the abandoned island of Pessegueiro, a source of inspiration for the most poetic. There are vestiges of the Carthaginian occupation during the 3rd century B.C. and the Roman occupation, in particular the containers for salting fish, but the tradition and imagery of the place speak of a centuries-old pirate refuge. Today you can see the ruins of a fort built in the 17th century which, together with a twin fortress in Porto Côvo, defended this stretch of coast. The bravest ones can try to reach the island, but with caution, as there are no organised excursions.
