Polvese Island is the largest of the three islands in Lake Trasimeno, in Umbria. The island has an extension of 70 hectares, the summit reaches 313 m above sea level, the territory is of particular interest from the naturalistic point of view for the variety of environments present in the small perimeter. On the northern side the vegetation is typical of the Mediterranean scrub with tall holm oaks, downy oaks and oaks, in the undergrowth grow viburnum, laurel, butcher’s broom, manna ash, privet, strawberry tree, dogwood and various species of maple.
The wetland is characterized by the reed thicket, which is more extensive on the eastern and southern side, along with the reed swamp rushes, sedges and scirpi thrive. Off the reedbed prevails the aquatic vegetation with swimming and submerged hydrophytes represented by ceratophylls, water milfoils and brazil. Olive groves are the main crop and cover about 40 hectares along the southern side.
