Plain of Verteglia

The Verteglia Plain (m. 1230) is dominated to the south by Mt. Cercetano and Mt. Savoceta. In the plain there are a few restaurants and a small lake.In addition, the plain is covered with beech trees and summer pastures fed by resurgences such as those of Candraloni (m. 1350), Madonna (m. 1150), Cavalli, Uccelli and Acque Nere. These resurgence waters then precipitate into the numerous swallow holes present, such as the famous one of the Bocca del Dragone. The so-called "Dragon’s Mouth" is nothing more than an example of a karst phenomenon. Located at an altitude of 670 m, it constitutes one of the sinkholes that convey, through the subsoil aquifers, meteoric waters to the springs of Serino. In the Acqua degli Uccelli locality, one then reaches the junction of the state highway branch where one reaches after about 3,800 meters to another plain, the Campolaspierto plain (m. 1280).
