The historic centre of Lausanne is an up and down cobbled alleyway where cars are not allowed. The most pleasant area is undoubtedly around Place de la Palud. From here, small uphill and downhill streets branch off, which on Wednesday and Saturday mornings are occupied by the colourful market stalls. In the center of the square stands the Fontaine de la Justice, one of the oldest fountains in Lausanne, certainly the best known. Just behind the fountain, set in a building, there is a carillon clock that on the stroke of every hour from 9 to 19 gives life to an animated show that illustrates the history of the Canton of Vaud, of which Lausanne is the capital. Behind the fountain, the picturesque wooden staircase leads up to the cathedral.
Another remarkable building on Place de la Palud is the Hôtel de Ville (town hall) with its beautiful arcade and flowering balconies.
