Place Bellecour is the most important square in Lyon and, with its 310 meters by 200, is the fourth largest in France. It surpasses in size Constitution Square in Mexico City and Red Square in Moscow and is the largest pedestrian square in Europe. In the centre there is a bronze statue of King Louis XIV.
It is a place of meeting and exchange, of spontaneous aggregation, where political conventions and even film screenings are held. On the occasion of the Lugdunum Roller Contest and the Whitsun Bowls Tournament, two annual events, it is also transformed into a sports area. This important square has witnessed all the developments of the city of Lyon in the last two centuries and continues to be the true heart of city life.
