Fried pizza is not only a Neapolitan specialty. Pizz’onde or pizzonte are a typical street food from Abruzzo whose literal meaning is just that of "greasy pizza". The canonical dough of flour, water, yeast and salt is divided into many small discs and dipped in hot oil; sometimes milk is added, to make these appetizing fritters even softer and more fragrant. The rest is taken care of by the toppings which, just like the standard pizza, range from vegetables, cheese, meat and chocolate. First of all, however, we recommend you to try them in their natural state: you will realize that they are delicious even on their own, golden, crispy and, above all, nice and greasy.
The size of a "normal" Abruzzo pizzonta must be at least the diameter of a bicycle wheel!
The pizzonta had to feed a traveler and a worker and therefore we did not think of gourmet or mini versions, but it had to be large and always accompanied by salami, local cheese and the Abruzzese street food par excellence: the arrosticini!
