Minoritski Square is the first square you come to on entering the pedestrianised old town of Ptuj, after crossing the large bridge connecting the new town with the medieval old town. This square is the junction that leads eastwards towards the squares of the old town and westwards towards the Drava riverfront. It is characterized above all by the large Franciscan monastery that occupies the entire south side of the open space. Despite numerous fires and bombings, the monastery has now been completely restored and boasts a unique monastic library with over 5,000 books.
In front of the monastery is a column commemorating the plague of 1655. On its top there is a statue of the Madonna with the Child Jesus.
