Piazza Matteotti, also known as Piazza San Giacomo, is one of the main meeting points for the people of Udine. This is where the market is held every morning, and where people meet to drink a taj (a glass of wine) in one of the cosy taverns housed in the arcades that surround the square. This square is a real gem, a mix of historic buildings and bars with outdoor seating. In the center stands the Fountain of Giovanni da Udine, built in 1543, and next to the square is the church of San Giacomo, built in 1398. On the facade of the church you will notice a small balcony with an altar: in the ‘400 and ‘500 it allowed to follow the Mass to those who were in the square. The tower of the church houses the first public clock of the city of Udine since 1525.
