Piazza I Maggio was the heart of the city in the Middle Ages and in fact the cobbled streets that branch off from Piazza I Maggio (formerly Piazza Vecchia) are a labyrinth of pastel-coloured houses that retain the atmosphere of times gone by.
In the centre of the square there is a large cistern built at the end of the 1700s to collect the rainwater that arrived in the basin coming down from the nearby houses through the fish supported by two stone putti placed at the corners of the square. The square is therefore raised above the surrounding cobblestones where the houses are built. A sort of square-monument that is worth admiring especially at dusk, when it is tinged with blue thanks to the lights with which the buildings are illuminated.
