Piazza Grande is the heart of Montepulciano and the stage for the main events of the city, including the Bravio delle Botti, held every year in August, and much more. The square is L-shaped and overlooked by all the main historical buildings of Montepulciano and the Pozzo dei Grifi e dei Leoni:
the Cathedral of the Assumption, Palazzo Comunale, Pozzo dei Grifi e dei Leoni, Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo, Palazzo dei Nobili Tarugi, Palazzo Contucci. The square, however, was originally smaller and the palaces that stood there were of medieval forms, the architecture of the current buildings instead dates back to the renewal of the city in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and shows the influence of cultural currents of the Florentine and Roman Renaissance, unified in a set of great interest.
