Perugia and the legend of the Temple of Saint Archangel

A legendary story links the origin of the Temple of Sant’Arcangelo to the liberation of Perugia by the paladins of France. It is one of the most deeply rooted city stories, spread by storytellers who went through towns and villages telling of Olivieri, paladin of France, taken prisoner and locked in the Etruscan Arch by a terrible pagan master of the city. But it wasn’t long before the valiant Orlando arrived who chased the pagan away and freed his friend. In the place where Orlando camped, a church was erected in honour of the Archangel who helped Orlando get to Perugia in time. From this story the fact that the church was called, still in ‘500 the "pavilion of Orlando"!
