The Palazzo della Pilotta, severely damaged by the bombardments of 1944, was partially rebuilt. Today it houses some of the most important institutions of the city:
Palatine Library, Archaeological Museum, National Gallery, Farnese Theatre, University of Parma, Institute of Art History, Superintendence of Galleries of Parma and Piacenza, Art Institute P. Toschi.
The nucleus dates back to 1583 by Francesco Paciotto, commissioned by Duke Ottavio Farnese, who wanted a runner " (arcade gallery) that could unite the two ducal palaces of the Rocchetta and the Park. It takes its current name from the original function for which the courtyard was intended, i.e. the game of pelota" (Basque game).
