The Museum of Panos & Elias Iliopoulos is not just a repository of art and historical photography; it is a deeply thought-out space that combines elements of the past with modern design. Situated in a charming back street close to the city center of Filiatra, the museum is housed in the very building where Panos Iliopoulos lived and established his first photography studio.
Architecture and Design Though the facade of the building preserves the architectural charm of Filiatra's past, the interior is a stark contrast. Designed by Antonis Iliopoulos, the son of Panos, the building underwent transformative changes. Now, it stands as a four-level modern edifice, where the only trace of its historical form is its facade. The museum features a unique patio and a terrace that surprises visitors with panoramic views of the city, olive groves, and Mount Egaleo.
The Exhibits The ground floor is dedicated to the paintings of Panos Iliopoulos. Meanwhile, the basement, evoking the ambiance of a photo booth, allows visitors to delve into a portion of Panos's extensive photographic archive. Here, visitors can also watch a short biographical video to gain more insights into his life and work. The second floor is home to the artworks of Elias Iliopoulos, along with photographs featuring him. Elias, who studied at ASKT and in the USA, currently lives and paints in Kyparissia, where he finds his artistic inspiration.
Dynamic Cultural Hub Inaugurated in December 2018, the museum aims to be more than just a display space. It seeks to become a dynamic cultural hub in the region by hosting various artistic, educational, and recreational activities, enriching the local community and attracting visitors from far and wide.
Archival Preservation The museum’s total photographic archive has been carefully preserved and is kept at the Benaki Museum, ensuring that this treasure trove of cultural and artistic significance remains safeguarded for future generations.
