The chiavi di San Pietro (St. Peter’s Keys) are traditional Palermo sweets eaten on June 29th, for the feast of Saints Peter and Paul. As is often the case in Sicily, a typical sweet is associated with a religious event, which in this case consists of a biscuit in the shape of a key, and which in this period is on display in many pastry shops in Palermo.Towards the middle of June, keys made from honeydew paste (from apple trees), paste and toasted almonds (sussamela), nougat, cinnamon and other sweets begin to be sold in Palermo, scattered and piled up on tables and baskets. There are various shapes, sizes and prices.
