The Palais Longchamp is a monument in the 4th arrondissement of Marseille, France. Despite the name, this is not a palace. It's an extravagant monument to the glory of water and its crucial importance ever since Marseille was founded by the Greeks in 600 BC. Palais Longchamp was born to mark the terminus of the new aqueduct which brought water from the Durance River to Marseille. Designed by Henri-Jacques Espérandieu, the architect of Notre Dame de la Garde, it was inaugurated in 1869. It houses the Musée des beaux-arts and Muséum d'histoire naturelle de Marseille. The surrounding Longchamp Park is listed by the French Ministry of Culture as one of the Notable Gardens of France.
