About Pailón del Diablo: Ecuador's Most Powerful Waterfall

Pailón del Diablo: Ecuador's Most Powerful Waterfall - 1 Km 17 | Secret World Trip Planner

The noise arrives before the sight. A few hundred meters from the waterfall, while walking along the path that descends into the gorge of the Pastaza River, the air begins to tremble with a low and continuous rumble, as if the earth itself were breathing. Then the mist appears: first thin, then increasingly dense, until one is completely enveloped in a humid cloud that dampens the hair, glasses, and clothes. Only then, rounding the last bend, does El Pailón del Diablo appear.

Located near the village of Río Verde, in the province of Tungurahua, this waterfall plunges about 80 meters into a narrow gorge of black volcanic rock, with a power that in the rainy months can reach extraordinary flows. The name — literally "the devil's cauldron" — perfectly describes the turbulent pool that forms at the base, where the water swirls in chaotic spirals before continuing its course downward. It is a spectacle that does not need to be embellished.

The suspended bridge: entering the mist zone

Pailón del Diablo: Ecuador's Most Powerful Waterfall - 1 Km 17 | Secret World Trip Planner

What makes El Pailón del Diablo different from many other waterfalls is the possibility of getting physically close. The main path includes a suspended bridge that crosses the canyon directly in front of the waterfall, positioned in the so-called mist zone: the point where the falling water generates a constant humid wind that hits anyone on the bridge. Walking on that swaying structure while tens of thousands of liters of water fall just a few meters away is an experience that engages all the senses simultaneously.

From the bridge, there is also the most direct view of the shape of the waterfall: the water does not fall in a single compact stream, but splits into multiple tongues that converge downward, creating a fan effect that continuously changes depending on the river's flow. In the rainiest months, between November and February, the waterfall becomes almost unrecognizable compared to the dry season: the volume of water can triple, and the mist becomes so thick that photography becomes difficult.

How to get there and how much it costs

The Pailón del Diablo is easily reachable from the city of Baños de Agua Santa, which is about 17 kilometers away. Baños is a well-connected tourist hub with Quito and Ambato, and from there, local buses frequently depart for Río Verde, with a ticket cost of a few dollars. Alternatively, many visitors rent bicycles in Baños and ride down the Ruta de las Cascadas, a scenic road that passes by several minor waterfalls before reaching Río Verde.

Entry to the waterfall area requires the payment of a ticket of about 2 dollars for adults (the price may vary slightly). From the parking lot or the entrance of the town, the trail to the waterfall takes about 20-30 minutes on foot downhill, on a path that is partly stepped and partly unpaved. The uphill return is obviously more challenging and takes a bit more time. The entire visit, including stops for photos and time on the bridge, takes about an hour and a half.

What to bring and what to expect

The right preparation makes a significant difference. The mist generated by the waterfall is constant and intense: anyone who approaches the bridge or the closest viewpoints will get completely wet within a few minutes. Bringing a waterproof jacket or a light raincoat is essential, not optional. Cameras and phones should be protected, preferably with waterproof cases or plastic bags, because the moisture is enough to damage electronics in a short time.

Non-slip shoes are recommended because the paths and rocks near the waterfall are always wet. The best time to visit, if you want to find fewer crowds, is early in the morning on weekdays: on weekends, El Pailón del Diablo attracts many local visitors from Baños and nearby towns, and the trails can become crowded. The morning light, moreover, under favorable conditions creates visible rainbows in the mist of the waterfall, a sight that alone is worth the early wake-up.

The natural context: the gorge and volcanic rock

The waterfall exists thanks to the particular geology of this area of the Ecuadorian Andes. The Pastaza River flows through an area heavily shaped by the volcanic activity of Tungurahua, the active volcano that looms over Baños and has erupted multiple times in recent decades. The black, shiny rock that forms the walls of the gorge is of volcanic origin, and its hardness has allowed the river to carve a narrow and deep canyon instead of widening into a broader bed. The result is that concentration of power that is felt even before seeing the waterfall.

Around the path, the vegetation is typical of the Andean jungle at this altitude: tree ferns, mosses, wild orchids growing on the damp rocks. The constant humidity generated by the waterfall creates a microclimate that favors particularly lush vegetation within a few hundred meters. Even those who are not passionate about botany will notice the contrast between the intense green of the plants and the black of the wet rock.
