The heart of the city is the elegant, wide square that alternates between street areas and stretches of garden, while all around are a few striking buildings that characterize its appearance. The former St. Ladislaus Square received its current name of Union Square between the two world wars. The Town Hall, the Greek-Catholic Bishop’s Palace, the Church of the Moon, the Black Eagle’s Palace, the Greek-Catholic Church of St. Hierarch Nicholas and the Church of St. Ladislaus can be found here. In the center of the square, a statue of King Ferdinand I, the founder of Greater Romania, was placed in 1924. Today, the statue of Michael the Brave stands here, the place where, year after year, the citizens and authorities of the city pay homage to the heroes of the nation.
