Porta S. Gennaro, so called because from it began the road that led to the catacombs where the patron saint of the city was buried.
Known by sources since 928, it is the oldest gate of the city of Naples. After the end of the plague epidemic in 1656, Mattia Preti painted a fresco on each of the city gates, as a votive offering for his escape from danger: Porta S. Gennaro is the only one that preserves a trace of the recently restored painting. On the internal façade there is the bust of S. Gaetano with a dedicatory inscription and the date 1658.
