Piazza San Gaetano is the oldest square in Naples, and the most important in the Greek-Roman period. The square takes its name from the Monument of the saint in the centre of the square, erected for a vow made after the end of the plague in 1656, and from the church of San Gaetano, more commonly known as San Paolo Maggiore.The Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore also overlooks the square.near the square there is also one of the entrances to "Napoli Sottorreanea".
