Quiet harbors, cobbled postcard alleys, romantic cliffs, long stretches of sand, lonely lighthouses, tumultuous windsurfing sea, elegant gardens, many historic houses and a pirate story linked to whaling. The small island of Nantucket (272km²) is located 50km south of Cape Cod, and is part of Nantucket Sound, a channel formed not only by the island of the same name but also by the tourist destinations of Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod. The most traditional way to get there is by ferry. The town of Nantucket is worth the ferry trip on its own: thanks to its characteristic cobbled streets, the many historic buildings and old sea captains’ houses, it is able to breathe a unique atmosphere, that of the time of whale hunting, which was the real economic hub of this town.
