A 4,000 metre high stratovolcano in Northern California, with an estimated age of over 500,000 years. A naturalistic attraction and a favorite destination for mountaineering enthusiasts. Mount Shasta is also one of the mysterious places of the American continent and the list of legends that circulate around this mountain is truly enviable.
Native Klamath tribes have revered the top of the mountain as the place of descent of the god Skell who fought a violent battle against Llao, the lord of the underworld. In the late 1800s, the publication of the novel A Dweller on Two Planets helped rekindle interest in the mountain, linking Mount Shasta to the lost continent of Lemuria[3] whose inhabitants are said to have found refuge in giant caves in the heart of the mountain. In more recent times, stories have circulated about secret tunnels, strange beings spotted by hikers, unexplained lights, and unexplained sightings of flying objects. Shasta is a strange place, one of the natural wonders of Northern California and one of many magical places around the world. For those interested in learning more I recommend the book Underground Worlds. The world of the hollow earth by Walter Krafton-Minkel. A curious and rigorous volume about UFOs, lost races, gnomes, giants and mysterious places.
