Motovun is one of the best hidden gems of Croatia and one of Europe’s best hidden gems. Located in Istria in the north of Croatia, this village of a few dozen inhabitants is world famous for the quality of its wines, olive oils and truffles. Motovun and Groznjan are in the green part of Istria, more humid, perfect for truffles but also for vineyards. Before entering the historical center and in the area included between the two city gates, there are some galleries and stores, including a wine store which offers wine tasting and a Zigante food store. Inside the walls there are instead many artists’ ateliers housed in beautiful Romanesque and Gothic style houses. Along the slope which leads to the old city have been built some modern buildings, in the area where every summer takes place a renowned film festival. Thanks to this event, in recent years Motovun has become the most visited place in the Istrian hinterland.
A lion of St. Mark’s with a grim look scrutinizes the visitors from the outside door, beyond which there is a terrace with a baroque loggia where there is a café’s terrace, from which it is possible to admire beautiful sunsets over the valley. A more tame-looking lion overlooks the arch of the inner door, where there is an old-style restaurant. Continuing for a stretch beyond the inner door, you reach the square of the village, where there is the only hotel of the village, an ancient well and the Church of Santo Stefano.
