The Miniature Wonderland in Hamburg’s warehouse district is a must-see for all railroad enthusiasts, explorers of the world, families and every other visitor to Hamburg!
More than 1100 trains with over 10,000 wagons as well as 137,000 trees, 289,000 figures, 10,250 cars, 47 airplanes in the air, 16,138 meters of track, 4,340 buildings and bridges were set up by more than 300 employees in over 990,000 working hours of loving detail work. In this model landscape of superlatives you will see realistic, completely computer-controlled train sequences. It’s even day and night in the railway world – even every 15 minutes. The Miniatur Wunderland has recently presented HafenCity Hamburg and the Elbphilharmonie in miniature. Look forward to what is probably the smallest concert hall in the world!
Welcome to Rio
After four years of construction work spanning continents, a new era is dawning in Hamburg’s most popular attraction: With Rio, a new storage building and the glass bridge over the canal including the special exhibition “The World from Above” are opening in Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg. The 46 square meter model of Rio de Janeiro is the first part of the new South America section. And since they wanted to build the city from a South American point of view, the masterpiece was created together with the model building family Martinez in a suburb of Buenos Aires.
Over 60,000 hours of construction went into the famous Copacabana alone! And what would a miniature replica of Rio be without a carnival? At the push of a button, dazzling floats and samba dancers come to life. A spectacle that, together with the expansion of the new storage facility, cost a total of 1.5 million euros.
Bella Italia in Miniatur Wunderland
After Rio, the “Bella Italia” area in Wunderland is one of the most recent of the ten existing miniature worlds.
After almost 3 years of construction and a total of 180,000 working hours, “Bella Italia” opened its doors in February 2018. On 190 m², visitors can immerse themselves in the diverse facets of Italy. Whether sunny beaches, historic buildings or mysterious ruins: “Bella Italia” offers all the images you would expect from a holiday in Italy. Of course, this also includes parts of Rome including St. Peter’s Basilica and the Colosseum, the bubbling volcano Vesuvius and the submerged city of Pompeii. Discover “Bella Italia”!
The Harz with an endlessly long ICE high-speed route and more than 130 trains is just as much at home here as landscapes from Austria, Scandinavia or replicas of well-known Hamburg districts and sights from Hamburg’s “Michel” to Hagenbeck’s zoo to the world port.
The USA in Hamburg lures with the desert and gambling metropolis of Las Vegas
A good 10% of all Wunderland lights are installed here – around 33,000 pieces. But the other areas are also scenically breathtaking: The Keys and Cape Canaveral merge directly into Las Vegas, and the Grand Canyon is only separated from Mount Rushmore and Yosemite National Park by a busy highway.
Scandinavia, Switzerland, France, Monaco
In 2005, the sixth section was completed with Scandinavia. The real water basin is particularly impressive here, in which 16 ships are currently sailing from miniature harbor to miniature harbor.
The Swiss section is the most impressive section to date – it opened in November 2007. The focus here is on the mountains with the 6 meter high Matterhorn, on which visitors can hike and enjoy the view when they reach the summit. Many highlights such as B. the small chocolate factory with real chocolate ejection, or the open-air concert with 21,000 young visitors amaze.
And this is just the beginning! In constant construction on open construction sites, the model world continues to grow by the minute. Additional sections are already planned up to 2028. After Rio and Patagonia, Central America and the Caribbean will follow and will probably be on display by the end of 2024.
The history of our civilization
7,000 years of history have been recreated in as many hours of painstaking manual work with great detail and numerous handcrafted figures and buildings. The history of our civilization from 5,500 B.C. to 1942 shown. In addition to the Neolithic Age, the Middle Ages and the time of the French Revolution, you can also marvel at the eras of the two world wars. To illustrate this for the visitors, an ideal-typical, non-real piece of land is shown as it must have looked in the respective epoch.
In 2021 the Miniatur Wunderland celebrated its 20th birthday.
