Marvão is a medieval town, located between Castelo de Vide and Portalegre, a few kilometers from the Spanish border. It is situated on the highest peak of the Serra de Sao Mamede, and from here you can enjoy an excellent view of the surroundings. Formerly known as Ammaia, Marvao still maintains the old walled city structure. Within its walls there are cobbled streets and typical Altentejo houses. Visit the castle and admire its fortifications, climb to the top of the Torre de Menagem, inside the castle, where you can enjoy the most beautiful view. The grandeur of the architectural heritage can be seen by admiring the Church of Santa Maria, now deconsecrated, where the City Museum is housed. Finally, don’t miss the Igreja de Santiago, the Renaissance Chapel of Santo Spirito and the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Estrela.
