The maritozzo, as a sweet of the classic tradition, has ancient origins. Already known in Roman times, from the Middle Ages onwards it symbolised the end of the Lenten period for centuries. For the Catholics of the time, in fact, there was no more pleasant joy than to end the forty days of fasting while waiting for Easter by eating a soft and sweet maritozzo (how can you blame them!).
There are many legends about the origin of its name. The most accredited one tells that it was prepared in particular way from the girls in age of "husband", to attract possible suitors with the greedy aroma released from the cooking.
The recipe of maritozzo Marche is one of the many variants of that Lazio, spread a bit ‘throughout the Italian territory. A custom, that of revisiting this recipe in a local key, which over the centuries has contributed to "nationalizing" this particular sweet bread, conquering the hearts, and the palates, of everyone.
