The Fortress Marienberg is the most dominating feature of the city; it towers above it all.Fortress Marienberg is visible from seemingly everywhere in Würzburg. Originally, there was a celtic palisade castle at this site. 704 AD the first Würzburg church was erected here. At the beginning of the 13th century fortifications were built around the church. The fortress was expanded and renovated several times during the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
To get there, you’ll need to cross the Old Main Bridge and follow the signs to hike up to the fortress. You’ll want to get this done early enough in the morning (in summer) to avoid hiking in the heat. But I promise you, the views will be worth it! Be sure to plan at least two hours in total for walking up/down to the fortress, as well as for exploring and taking photos.
