Marcus-Brunnen

The Marcus-Brunnen (Marcus Fountain) is a monumental fountain located in Bremen’s market square. The fountain was created by artist Johann Georg Büsch in 1662 and depicts the Roman god Mark, protector of the city of Bremen.The fountain consists of a large circular stone basin, on which rests a bronze statue of Mark, holding a sword and shield. Around the statue, there are four female figures representing the four seasons, while at the ends of the basin are two bronze lions.Marcus-Brunnen has become one of the symbols of the city of Bremen and a popular tourist attraction for visitors. The fountain is located in the market square, surrounded by stores, restaurants and cafes, and is also close to other important historical buildings, such as Bremen City Hall and St. Peter’s Church.
