Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is a leading international museum of modern art. Located on the coast it strikes that rarest of balances between landscape, architecture, and art in a unique interaction that attracts visitors from around the world and makes a visit to Louisiana something special throughout the year.

Louisiana’s founder, Knud W. Jensen, wanted to create a museum where Danes could see modern art, which until then had no special place in the Danish museums.

The museum, which is located 25 miles north of Copenhagen, with a panoramic view of Sweden across the Sound, presents six to ten special exhibitions annually and has a distinguished art collection with over 3,500 works.

For Louisiana it has never been an objectiv to represent the entire chronological line of modern art. The collection instead focuses on groups of works and artistic periods.

These include artists Giacometti and Jorn and periods such as European Nouveau Réalisme with Yves Klein, American Pop Art with Warhol and Lichtenstein, German art in the 1980s with Kiefer and Baselitz, and video art since the 1990s.

The museum works constantly to renew the collection and close any "holes". On the classic modern front, pieces by Louise Bourgeois, Philip Guston and David Hockney have been acquired together with major contemporary works.

Louisiana is also a vibrant cultural centre open in the evening Tuesday to Friday until 22:00 and offers a rich variety of activities and events.
