Liberation Square, also known as Midan al-Tahrir in Arabic, is located in the center of the city of Port Said in Egypt. It is a large public square that is the heart of the city and the place where many events and celebrations take place.The square is surrounded by several historic buildings, including the Prefecture of Port Said, St. Joseph's Cathedral, City Hall, and the Bank of Cairo. In the center of the square is a large statue of Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser, who led the 1952 revolution that led to the end of monarchical rule.The square was renamed Liberation Square in honor of Egypt's victory in the 1956 War of Independence against France, the United Kingdom and Israel, which led to the nationalization of the Suez Canal.The square was renovated and enhanced with a 20-meter-high obelisk, unveiled in 2016. The obelisk was made of black granite and is decorated with carvings and images representing the history of the city of Port Said and the Suez Canal. The base of the obelisk is surrounded by fountains and ornamental plants. In addition to being an important tourist attraction, Liberation Square is also an important meeting point for the people of Port Said, who gather here to celebrate national holidays, organize political and social events, and simply spend time with friends and family.
