Leukerbad, the highest spa in Europe

Leukerbad is located in the district of Leuk, from which it is about fifteen kilometres away, and can be reached from Italy by crossing the Simplon Pass in the northern area of the Ossola Valley. Leukerbad is the largest thermal spa and wellness centre in the Alps, a real oasis at high altitude where you can relax in a unique setting. Leukerbad’s thermal springs were already known in Roman times, but were also appreciated in more recent times. Personalities such as Sébastian Münster, Mark Twain, Thomas Cook, Lenin, James Baldwin, Herbert von Karajan and Eduard Zimmermann have long appreciated the healing powers of the so-called "Gold of Leukerbad". There are around 65 registered thermal springs, the most famous of which is the St. Lorenz spring, which spouts water at 51 degrees Celsius. The thermal water is calcium and sulphate based with a considerable content of sodium, strontium and iron and a very high concentration of fluoride. The water also has a high content of dissolved solids (1800-2000 mg/l). Among its properties, they have reported that it is particularly beneficial for nerves, bones and joints.
