Legend of Sangiovese

An intense and fragrant red wine that is also the symbol of Romagna. It is not yet as famous as it should be although in recent years it has become increasingly appreciated abroad as well. Sangiovese is both the name of the grape variety and the name of the wine. You may be interested to know that Sangiovese is the main grape variety behind Chianti, which is a blend of other red grape varieties. The name Sangiovese originated in Santarcangelo. An ancient legend, passed down from grandparents, says that the town’s Franciscan friars, several centuries ago, were great producers of red wine. One day, inside the convent they hosted an important person, a bishop. During the banquet, they served him a goblet of wine. The guest, amazed by the excellence of the drink, asked the name of it. One of the monks, inspired by the name of the hill on which the monastery is built and the intense color of the wine (as red as blood), immediately replied, "Blood of Jupiter." Only over time did the name change to "Sangiovese." We can say that it is an honest wine, a true wine, like the people of Romagna. A deep ruby color, a pleasant texture, a very intense aroma (cherry, red fruit, violets, spices) and a strong flavor that keeps the tannins in harmony with everything else.
