Lago dei Due Uomini is the largest of the Fagnano Lakes, a complex of small natural lakes recognized as S.I.C. (Site of Community Importance) by Decree of the Ministry of the Environment of 3 April 2000.
It has a total area of two hectares and is situated, at an altitude of 1,092 metres above sea level, in a thick beech wood that surrounds it on the whole perimeter.
It hosts a splendid caudate amphibian, the Tritone Alpestre, exclusive animal of the Calabrian fauna. The presence of the Alpine Newt was discovered in July 1982 by two French herpetologists, Dubois and Breuil, who baptized it Triturus alpestris inexpectatus because of its unexpected discovery as, until then, it was considered typical of central Europe.
In this ecosystem there are also the Italian Crested Newt (Triturus carnifex) and the Italian Newt (Triturus Italicus).
