A few km from the chaotic city of Rome, you can admire a real jewel of nature, immersed in a still uncontaminated territory. ? We are talking about the beautiful and relaxing Lake Martignano, of volcanic origin, also known as Lake Alsietino.
It is a very pleasant place to visit if you want to spend a day in total relaxation in contact with the greenery, if you want to go around the perimeter by bike or jogging and even if, in summer, you want to take a bath because the lake of Martignano is swimming.it occupies an area of 2,440 square kilometers and is located 305 meters above sea level. It has a maximum depth of about 60 m.
The lake has some small tributaries, mostly seasonal, while it has no emissaries. The basin is 2.015 km long and 1.545 km wide. The lake perimeter is about 6 km long.
Lake Martignano was formed over 130,000 years ago and was known to the Romans. They frequented the lake as a holiday resort and drew water from it using the Alseatium aqueduct built in 2 B.C. by Augustus to supply the Naumachia of Piazza San Cosimato in Trastevere dedicated to Julius Caesar.
There are no inhabited centres on the lake (except for a few rare farmhouses, including a farmhouse) and no roads have been built in the perimeter circuit, which has allowed the place to remain almost untouched. This characteristic has been exploited for the setting of the house of the Blue Fairy in the television screenplay The Adventures of Pinocchio by Luigi Comencini.
