Lake Kaindy is a freshwater lake located in the Tian Shan Mountains, just under two thousand meters above sea level, in the Kazakhstan region of Almaty. It has become a tourist attraction for its crystal-clear waters, but above all for its submerged trees, a real forest of perfectly preserved spruces. It was formed after a strong earthquake (7.7 on the Richter scale), in 1911, which caused a limestone landslide. The event completely changed the morphology of the mountain range, creating a natural dam, filled over the years by rainwater. Dozens of trees continue to this day to endure underwater, with their branches and trunks almost intact. The trees, in fact, have been preserved by the very cold water. This place, say the Almaty Tourist Office, has become quite popular especially among divers who wish to dive in an underwater oasis full of lush forest remains.
