Laino Castle in Calabria

Laino Castello stands on a rocky hill 270 meters above sea level, and is surrounded by the river Lao. It is not easy to establish the exact origin of Laino Castello but what is certain is that in 1811 Laino Castello was separated from Laino Borgo. A separation that lasted until 1928 when the two municipalities were united under the name of ‘Laino Bruzio’. An annexation that ended in 1947 with a definitive division. In the opinion of some experts, the current town of Laino Castello seems to have been founded by some survivors of Lavinium, a Roman town in the Orsomarso area whose inhabitants had escaped malaria, and by some people from the low and middle valley of Lao who had managed to escape the Barbarians’ raids.
