Located in the south of the country, Lake Atitlan is one of those places where you would stay much longer than the two days recommended by guidebooks.
The Mayans claimed that Lake Atitlan was the navel of the world.
It is considered by many to be the most beautiful lake in Latin America, with its shimmering waters, three volcanoes and twelve villages all around its shores. The writer Aldous Huxley, on the other hand, labelled this site "the most beautiful lake in the world".
Lake Atitlan is 1500 meters above sea level and enjoys constant temperatures throughout the year and, despite being one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, still manages to maintain its identity.
The shores of Lake Atitlan are ideal for relaxing in the shade of the trees, exploring the villages (easily accessible by boat and tuk tuk), studying Spanish, kayaking, scuba diving and volcano excursions.
