La Kounopetra

The Kounopetra of Kefalonia is a unique geological phenomenon. It is a large flat rock that emerges from the sea and is located near the beaches of Xi and Mega Lakos on the west coast of the island. This rock is known for its constant and continuous movement, moving from east to west at a frequency of 20 times per minute. This rock has long attracted the attention of scholars and scientists, so much so that it has been described as "a giant monolithic rock" by the distinguished Greek scholar E. K. Kostantakatos. In the past, the British Navy even attempted to transport the Kounopetra elsewhere, but the attempt failed. The slow movement of the Kounopetra is visible from the coast and even perceptible on its surface, where the vibrations are clearly felt. After the 1953 earthquake, the rock underwent a shift at its base that caused it to assume a stable position.Kounopetra represents a true natural phenomenon and a unique tourist attraction. For this reason, it is a must-see for those who visit Kefalonia and want to discover its natural treasures.
