The ‘Igreja de São Lourenço de Almancil’ was built in the first half of the 18th century, in Baroque style. You have to look for it on purpose because it is little advertised but it is a spectacle.
The interior decoration is an example of azulejar art and national baroque. The retable of the high altar is made of carved and gilded wood and the walls are entirely covered with azulejos historiati, with scenes from the life of San Lorenzo, the work of Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes. The whole, dated 1730, is one of the most successful examples of the inclusion of azulejo in architecture, so characteristic of Portuguese sacred art.
