Kumbhalgarh Fort – the Great Wall of India

Kumbhalgarh Fort, located in the Rajsamand District of Rajasthan, India, stands as a monumental fortress in the historical region of Mewar. This formidable structure was initially built in the 15th century by Maharana Kumbha and later expanded in the 19th century. It is also famously known as the birthplace of Maharana Pratap, a celebrated king and warrior of Mewar.

Perched at an elevation of 1,180 meters (3,871 feet) on a high ridge of the Aravali range, Kumbhalgarh Fort is noted for its strategic and nearly invincible position. Historically, it was so well-fortified that it required the combined forces of Delhi, Amber, and Marwar to breach its defenses.

One of the fort’s most remarkable features is its perimeter walls that extend for 36 km (22 miles), making it the second longest wall in the world after the Great Wall of China. The fort encompasses over 360 temples within its walls, along with seven massive fortified gateways and numerous watchtowers that provide a commanding view of the surrounding landscape.

Inside the fort, there is the stunning Badal Mahal, also known as the Palace of Cloud. This palace is celebrated for its exquisite architecture and panoramic views, embodying the grandeur of Rajput kingdoms. The fort’s massive walls and bastions hide a wealth of architectural and cultural treasures, making it a repository of history and heritage.

According to legend, the construction of Kumbhalgarh encountered several challenges, which were overcome only after a spiritual advisor suggested a human sacrifice to appease the land’s spirits. A volunteer was found, and his sacrifice led to the successful completion of the fort, with a temple built at the site where his head fell.
