Carso Terrano (Slovenian: teran) is a DOC wine whose production is allowed in the province of Trieste and in the part of Carso of Gorizia. The wine is also produced in nearby Slovenia, in the municipalities of Castagnevizza del Carso, Comeno and Sesana. Terrano is an autochthonous Friulian red grape variety and more precisely a sub-variety of Refosco, or a variety of the Refoschi family according to the different botanical languages. It is a very ancient vine, whose cultivation was already known to the Greeks who called it Pictaton, who appreciated its qualities in wine and considered it to come from the southern Adriatic. The Austrians particularly loved this wine for its medicinal properties due to the highly ferrous soil on which the vineyards are cultivated.
