Ilheus

The city of Ilheus is one of the most popular tourist destinations and offers a bit of everything making it an ideal destination for those seeking a mix of beach life, history and culture…all seasoned with the warm Bahian welcome. In front and on either side of Ilheus stretch a hundred kilometers of white sandy beach between the clear water of the Atlantic Ocean and the rainforest. The entire region of Ilheus is characterized by the exuberance of its landscape, as well as the waves that break on the "cocoa coast" (as the region’s coastline has been christened), waves that have made the area one of the surfing hotspots in northeastern Brazil. Cacao cultivation enabled Ilheus to reach the height of its development in the early 20th century thanks to its prosperous port. Ilheus is also known for hosting the works of its illustrious adopted son Jorge Amado. In honor of the writer, who so well interpreted the beauty and stories of the city, the residence where he spent his childhood has been transformed into the House of Culture. Special care is taken to preserve the natural beauty of the area, which can be reached by taking the Estrada Parque (which reaches Itacarè), the country’s first ecological road, with pristine beaches, mangroves and waterfalls …
