Ile de la cité one of the most romantic places in France

L’île de la cité is the small island on the Seine in the heart of Paris, its geographical and historical centre. It is here, in fact, that the first settlement of historical times arose, that of the people of Parisii. Later, from the time of the Roman colony until the 15th century, it was also the centre of temporal power in the west (Conciergerie) and spiritual power in the east (Notre-dame). Today, the island is home to some of the city’s most beautiful and famous monuments: Notre Dame Cathedral, the Sainte Chapelle, a true jewel of Gothic art, and the Conciergerie, the royal palace of the Capetingians, later transformed into a prison, which still preserves the cell in which Marie Antoinette was imprisoned. Another part of the ancient royal palace, instead, houses the Palace of Justice. It is on the Île de la cité, moreover, that the famous quai des orfèvres is located, where Simenon’s witty character, Commissioner Maigret, solved his cases. If you are on this island, which is without doubt one of the most romantic places in the French capital, with its bridges reflected in the Seine and reminiscent of the long history of a place that has seen so many events unfold, don’t just visit its monuments, but wander around its streets… Perhaps at n. 9 of the Quai aux Fleurs, you will notice the plaque that reminds you of the tragic passion that united the theologian Abelard with his disciple Eloisa 900 years ago, or, turning a corner at the tip of the island, you will find yourself in a square a bit hidden, but very pleasant, the place Dauphine, where you can play bowls or have a good aperitif, away from the flow of tourists. Not even those who are frantically looking for souvenirs will be disappointed by this island. In fact, next to the Cathedral of Notre Dame, there are a number of cheap shops offering many gift ideas.
