Il Cassero per la scultura italiana dell’Ottocento e del Novecento – Museo e Centro di Documentazione – the only museum space in Italy that by vocation is dedicated to sculpture, is a unique project of its kind in Italy.
It has as its primary purpose the research and documentation of Italian sculpture of the period, setting up wide-ranging exhibitions, establishing relations with Tuscan and Italian Universities, acting as a point of reference for the numerous plaster casts libraries and Artist Museums in the Region and in Italy, and initiating joint projects with them for the dissemination and knowledge of collections little known and visited.
At the moment the permanent collection, completely restored, consists of more than half a thousand works including bronzes, marbles, plaster casts, terracotta and drawings, of Tuscan and Italian artists, arrived in Montevarchi thanks to private donations, together with a considerable number of original documents, period photographs and press reviews, whose entity is being catalogued. In the collection of the "Cassero", in which there are works of historical and artistic importance of Michelangelo Monti, Timo Bortolotti, Arturo Stagliano, Alberto Giacomasso, Mentore Maltoni, Valmore Gemignani, Firenze Poggi and Donatella (Dodi) Bortolotti, also came the sculptures of Montevarchi Pietro Guerri, Elio Galassi and Ernesto Galeffi, already owned by the Municipality.
