At dawn, when the fog slowly rises over the waters of Lake Ichkeul, tens of thousands of migratory birds begin to move. Pink flamingos stand out in long lines on the surface of the water, while grey herons watch motionless the muddy shores. This scene, which repeats every autumn and winter, is the beating heart of the Ichkeul National Park, located near Menzel Bourguiba, in northern Tunisia, about 60 kilometers from Tunis.
The park has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980 and is part of the Ramsar list, the international convention for the protection of wetlands. At the center of it all is Lake Ichkeul, a freshwater body of about 12,600 hectares that connects to the sea through the Tinja River. This connection creates a rare natural phenomenon: during the summer, when the lake level drops, marine waters rise up the river and the lake becomes partially salty. In autumn, with the rains, it returns to freshwater. This seasonal oscillation is the key to all the biodiversity of the place.
An ecosystem built on changing water
The seasonal transformation of the lake is not just a chemical fact: it is the engine that attracts hundreds of thousands of waterfowl every year. Species such as the mallard, the Eurasian wigeon, the coot, and the white spoonbill find ideal conditions here to winter, feed, and reproduce. In the months of November and December, the number of birds present can exceed 200,000 individuals, making Ichkeul one of the most significant wintering sites in the western Mediterranean.
The lake is surrounded by reeds and rush meadows, environments that also host mammals such as the European otter and the wild boar. On the southern side rises the Jebel Ichkeul, a limestone massif that reaches an altitude of 511 meters. Climbing to the summit offers a unique perspective on the entire ecosystem: the lake to the north, the marshes to the east, and in the background, the Gulf of Bizerte.
The flamingos and other winged protagonists
The flamingos are probably the most photographed guests of the park. Their presence is not guaranteed all year round, but in the cold months it is common to observe large groups moving in formation over the shallow waters, filtering food with their characteristic curved beak. Unlike many African reserves, here it is possible to approach relatively discreetly along the park's paths without excessively disturbing the wildlife.
The herons — both the gray and the red ones — are instead present almost all year round. They can be seen standing still among the reeds or gliding slowly over the muddy shores in search of fish. For those with binoculars, it is also possible to observe the kingfisher and, with more luck, the very rare sacred ibis, which has colonized some wetland areas of the Mediterranean in recent decades.
How to visit the park effectively
The best time to visit Ichkeul is between October and February, when the concentration of migratory birds is at its highest. In summer, the lake lowers, temperatures rise, and wildlife is less visible. The park has a small ecomuseum at the entrance, built in traditional style, which illustrates the history of the site and the natural cycles of the lake. It is worth spending half an hour there before venturing onto the trails.
To reach the park from Tunis, the most convenient option is to rent a car or take a taxi to Menzel Bourguiba, from where it is a short drive to the lake. There are no direct bus connections to the park entrance. Bringing enough water, suitable shoes for muddy terrain, and binoculars are essential for fully enjoying the experience. The entrance ticket is affordable and is paid at the entrance, but it is advisable to check the opening hours in advance, as they may vary seasonally. Spending at least three or four hours on the visit allows you to walk the main trails and reach the most scenic observation points along the shores of the lake.
Conservation and Environmental Challenges
The park has experienced difficult times between the Eighties and Nineties, when the construction of dams on the rivers feeding the lake reduced its freshwater inflow, altering the salinity balance and causing a significant decline in wintering birds. Subsequent water management interventions have partially restored the original conditions, and the number of birds has begun to grow again. This makes Ichkeul an interesting case study on the management of Mediterranean wetlands and the possibility of recovering degraded ecosystems.
Visiting this park also means bringing home a concrete awareness: what you see — the flamingos, the reeds, the reflection of Jebel on the water — is the fragile result of balances that can be altered in just a few years. A silent lesson that the landscape offers without the need for explanatory signs.
