Hidden Portugal: Castelo de Vide

Located in the inland part of the Alentejo, on the border with Spain, Castelo de Vide is one of the most important destinations in the region. It is dominated by a marvelous castle and you will feel as if you are taking a step back into the Middle Ages, with its intertwining of narrow alleys, whitewashed houses and Gothic portal frames. Already at the end of 1200 the town was a defensive fort against foreign invaders, and still today you can admire several testimonies of this tumultuous past. What to see in Castelo de Vide As far as religious architecture is concerned, the church of Santa Maria da Devesa dominates the town centre with its white façade and double bell towers, truly one of the distinctive features of this town. The old Jewish quarter is characterized by ogival frames that finish the doors of the houses. The Medieval Synagogue with its Gothic doors will take you back in time. From the roof of the powder magazine of the Castle you can enjoy a wonderful view of the city and the surrounding landscape. The medieval quarter is absolutely wonderful: with its picturesque narrow streets and protected by the walls with ramparts it will leave you breathless. From the fort of Sao Roque you can enjoy a wonderful view of the bucolic landscape.
