Gripsholm Castle is located on the shores of lake Mälaren, in the area around Stockholm, Sweden. Just like Kalmar Castle it gained its renaissance look in the mid 1500s during the reign of Gustav Vasa, an older castle had previously existed on the site though. The renovations were completed during the reign of Gustavs son, Eric XIV. Changes to the castle would be frequently made throughout the 1500s and some even later. Between 1773 and 1785 Gustav III, known as the "theatre king" spent long periods of time in the castle, and among other things added a theatre. In the late 19th century efforts were made to restore the castle to the way it would have looked during the renaissance.
