The small village of Grassano, where Carlo Levi, author of the splendid novel Christ stopped at Eboli, spent part of his Lucanian exile; in his masterpiece the author describes the city in this way: White on top of a high desolate hill, like an imaginary little Jerusalem in the solitude of a desert.
The romantic village of Grassano is also known as the City of the Nativity; in fact, it is the custodian of the beautiful nativity scene composed by the renowned artist Franco Artese, world-famous nativity scene artist and native of the city; the work is kept in Palazzo Materi, seat of the Town Hall, and is a reinterpretation of the Nativity putting as protagonist his fellow countrymen, the humble farmers of the Fifties intent on living their humble and sincere life.
