The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), also known as the Giza Museum, is considered the largest museum of Egyptian art in the world, located near the Necropolis of Giza. However, its opening is scheduled for 2020.
The over 100,000 exhibits will be displayed on 480,000 square meters.
The building has the shape of a blunt triangle in the plane and is located two kilometers northwest of the pyramids of Giza, near the Cairo-Alex motorway junction.
The north and south walls of the building line up with the Pyramid of Cheops and the Pyramid of Mycerinus. In front of the building there is a large square, full of date palms.
One of the main features of the museum is the translucent stone wall, made of alabaster, which forms the front facade of the building. The interior of the main entrance opens into a large atrium, from which the museum rooms can be accessed.
Among the finds that will be shown at the museum, we will find: the complete collection of Tutankhamun’s tomb, 5000 artifacts transferred from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and selected finds from the Egyptian museums of Luxor, Minya, Sohag, Assiut, Beni Suef, Fayoum, Delta and Alexandria.
