"GR® 34, the Sentier des Douaniers "
This is one of the most iconic pathways of the French Grande Randonnée® (GR) hiking trail network. The GR® 34 ‘sentier des douaniers’ runs for more than 1,800 km along the entire Breton coastline, featuring stunning views over the sea. An unforgettable experience!
The ‘sentier des douaniers’ was created back in 1791 to criss-cross the coastline and prevent the smuggling of contraband goods. The path fell into disrepair in the early 20th Century, but has enjoyed a new lease of life since 1968, with the appearance of the famous red and white trail markings close to Lannion, that act as signpost markers for the route. Nowadays the GR® 34 runs all around the Breton shoreline from the Mont-Saint-Michel to the Arzal barrage (Morbihan).Rocky outcrops, wilderness coastlines, marshland, dunes, beaches, creeks, diverse flora and fauna and a rich historical heritage… there’s a picture-postcard view at every turn.
