About Gorely: The Volcano with Acid Lakes in Kamchatka

Gorely: The Volcano with Acid Lakes in Kamchatka - Kamchatka Krai | Secret World Trip Planner

The smell of sulfur arrives even before seeing the craters. Walking along the slopes of the Gorely volcano, in the Kamchatka peninsula, one realizes that the landscape around does not resemble anything familiar: black lava rocks alternate with patches of yellow and orange earth, colored by sulfur deposits, while in the distance the Pacific shapes the horizon. This is one of the most accessible volcanoes in Kamchatka, yet it retains a wild authenticity that few places in the world can still offer.

Gorely: The Volcano with Acid Lakes in Kamchatka - Kamchatka Krai | Secret World Trip Planner

Gorely is a shield volcano located about 75 kilometers southwest of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the regional capital. Its maximum elevation reaches 1829 meters above sea level, but it is the structure of the volcano that makes it truly extraordinary: not a single crater, but a chain of at least 11 overlapping craters, some of which host lakes of sulfuric acid in impossible colors — intense turquoise, emerald green, sometimes almost milky white depending on the weather conditions and geothermal activity.

A volcano with many faces

Gorely: The Volcano with Acid Lakes in Kamchatka - Kamchatka Krai | Secret World Trip Planner

Gorely belongs to the category of shield volcanoes, which means that its historical eruptions have produced extensive and relatively fluid lava flows rather than violent explosions. The last significant eruption dates back to the 1980s, and since then the volcano has maintained a constant fumarolic activity. Walking along the edge of the main crater, one can observe the fumaroles that continuously emit steam and sulfur gases: a visible and olfactory reminder that the ground beneath one's feet is alive.

The acid lakes within the craters are the true attraction of the place. The largest lake, visible from the edge, has a bright turquoise color that contrasts almost unrealistically with the black of the surrounding volcanic rock. This coloration is caused by the presence of sulfuric acid and dissolved sulfur compounds in the water — an extreme environment that, despite everything, hosts some forms of bacterial life. Photographing it requires patience: the best light is obtained in the central hours of the day, when the sun is high enough to illuminate the bottom of the crater.

How to reach and what to expect on the hike

The standard starting point for the hike to Gorely is the village of Mutnovsky, accessible from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky via dirt roads that require an off-road vehicle. Most visitors arrange transportation through local agencies operating in the capital, as public transport does not cover this route. The cost of a guided day tour, including transportation and a guide, generally ranges between 100 and 150 euros per person, depending on the operator and the season.

The ascent route from the parking lot to the main crater takes about 3-4 hours under normal conditions, with a positive elevation gain of about 900 meters. The trail is not marked in a traditional way and crosses unstable lava terrain: it is advisable to wear sturdy hiking shoes with a hard sole and to bring trekking poles. The wind at high altitudes can be strong and cold even in summer, so layered clothing is essential. The best season to visit Gorely is between July and September, when the snow retreats from the higher altitudes and the days are long enough.

Practical tips for the visit

Those suffering from respiratory problems should carefully consider the visit: the sulfur gases emitted by the fumaroles can be intense, especially near the craters and with weak winds. Some local guides carry masks or advise staying upwind from the main fumaroles. Bringing at least two liters of water per person is the bare minimum, as there are no sources along the route.

It is strongly recommended to start in the early morning — ideally by 7:00 AM — to have the maximum available time at altitude and return before the afternoon brings any potential weather changes. Kamchatka is known for unpredictable weather: fog and rain can arrive quickly even in summer. Relying on a local guide is not only a matter of safety but also of navigation in terrain that, without clear landmarks, can easily disorient.

Why the trip is worth it

Kamchatka as a whole is one of the most remote and least visited regions of Russia, and Gorely represents one of the most tangible accesses to the living geology of the planet. It is not a natural museum to be viewed from afar: here you walk on lava solidified for decades, you feel the heat of the ground beneath your feet near the fumaroles, you observe the steam rising from the craters as if the mountain were breathing.

Returning to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky after a day on Gorely means bringing back something difficult to describe: the concrete feeling of having seen the earth in its most elemental state, before anything grew on it. It is an experience that stays with you.
